Introduction

S74

For now, this is just another three character dot com gathering dust on the internet, which is a shame, because this particular page seems to get a few visitors.

I'm not sure where you're all coming from, but I'll assume it has nothing to do with the s74 character combination itself, for which Wikipedia gives the following information:

  • S74 (Long Island bus).
  • S74 (New York City bus) serving Staten Island.
  • S74 postcode for Barnsley area.
  • Fiat S74, a 1912 racing car driven by Louis Wagner during 1912 French Grand Prix.
  • HMCS Okanagan (S74), a 1966 Oberon-class submarine that served in the Canadian Forces Savoia-Marchetti.
  • S.74, a 1934 four engine airliner.

As fascinating as the above sounds, I'm sure you're not here for any of that. Either way, I haven't decided on the exact details regarding the direction of this web space, but I'm leaning toward providing links to my favourite design sites. For now though, this place-setter will have to suffice while I wait for inspiration to strike. :)

Design Notes

You'll have to forgive the lackluster page appearance, but I've virtually given up trying to make web pages look acceptable in all browsers. It's simply not possible. Besides, these pages are merely place-setters until something more permanent replaces them.

I have to say, there is nothing more deflating than producing a text-based web page in Safari, only to fire it up in IExplorer on Windows and see its poorly-conceived, text-rendering engine completely trash it.

The bottom line is, you'll never get a standard text-based, web page to look good through Windows IExplorer until they update their text rendering engine - period. I hear they'll be using Direct Write for IE9. About time. I hope it's an improvement.

Anyway, if you're using Windows, this page is best viewed through a Safari Browser with the Quartz Engine running. On a Mac, it shouldn't matter. Under all circumstances, high pixel density (ppi) is preferable. Text-based webpages simply don't look right on any other setup.

This web space has been pieced together from scatch pretty quickly. In due course, I'll endeavor to improve things.
